The Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB) is a research unit of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the world’s leading applied research organization. Prioritizing key technologies and commercializing its findings in business and industry, it plays a major role in the innovation process.

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft currently operates 76 institutes and research units with over 30,000 employees, predominantly scientists and engineers. Fraunhofer’s annual research budget is €2.9 billion, of which €2.5 billion are generated from contract research.

Fraunhofer IGB has several decades of experience in the development of environmental technologies and innovative water management approaches. The recovery of resources from waste streams is one of IGB’s focus areas.

IGB develops biological, physical and chemical technologies and processes to recover energy, nutrients and other resources from wastewater, digestate and other streams of organic and inorganic wastes.
